PS2 Staff Picks
Here they are - the top three games that various staff
members of the VGF Network will/would buy on October 26th.
Considering these two are getting most of the hype out of the
PS2 launch games, SSX and Summoner are the titles that got the
most attention according to our writers.

#1) Summoner – "With poop like Quest 64, Evolution,
and Beyond the Beyond, it's sort of become a tradition for the
first attempt at an RPG on a console to suck. I'm not sure
why, but it usually takes a few role playing titles to fail on
a new machine for just one to succeed. This common tendency
may well end with the PS2, as Summoner looks to combine slick
graphics and art with a gripping plotline and an inventive
battle system (Check out my
preview for more
info)" (Publisher: THQ | Developer: Volition)
#2) Fantavision (Publisher: SCEA | Developer: Sony)
#3) SSX (Publisher: EA | Developer: EA)

#1) Summoner – "To be honest, none of the titles at
launch really stick out in my mind as being
"must-buys". There are definitely some good games in
the lineup, but most of them feel just like their PSX
counterparts with enhanced graphics. If I buy any game though,
it'll definitely be Summoner. Developed by Volition, THQ's
upcoming epic is looking very sweet. The graphics easily
surpass any RPG on any system, and the gameplay is unique
enough to deliver a new gameplay experience (while staying
true enough to RPG standards that there's little chance of it
‘sucking’)." (Publisher: THQ | Developer: Volition)
#2) SSX (Publisher: EA | Developer: EA Sports)
#3) Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore (Publisher: Tecmo |
Developer: Team Ninja)

#1) Ridge Racer V – "I can already hear them now –
‘Joe, RRV is just a rehash of RRIV, even though that game is
probably better!’. Well, I’m sorry, but I’m a die-hard
Ridge Racer fan. I remember playing the living crap out of the
original conversion for the PSX, so what better way to kick
off a new console than with Ridge Racer V? I know it may not
have the longest of long-term replay value, but RRV isn’t
the only game available, remember. Long live Namco’s arcade
goodness!" (Publisher: Namco | Developer: Namco)
#2) Summoner (Publisher: THQ | Developer: Volition)
#3) NHL 2001 (Publisher: EA Sports | Developer: EA Sports)

#1) SSX – "Everyone has been praising this title
more than the much touted Madden, so I'm anxious to see how EA
has upped the ante in the snowboard genre." (Publisher:
EA | Developer: EA)
#2) Madden (Publisher: EA | Developer: EA)
#3) Tekken Tag Tournament (Publisher: Namco | Developer:
Namco)

#1) SSX – "What's not to love about this game?
Amazing, fluid graphics combined with a real-time soundtrack,
pinpoint control and breakneck speed. It looks as if EA wants
to treat PS2 users to an odd gem right from the start - a
great snowboarding game." (Publisher: EA | Developer:
EA)
#2) Ridge Racer V (Publisher: Namco | Developer: Namco)
#3) Time Splitters (Publisher: Eidos | Developer: Free
Radical)

#1 SSX- "I've been watching this one for a while
now...downloading movies, scanning the 'net, and I have to say
that it has the most potential. I didn't get into Tony Hawk
'til it came out for the DC, but I was glad I did play it, and
SSX looks like it can not only compete, but it might actually
take first! The rest of the launch games that everyone seems
so hot about are either rehashes (Tekken, DOA, Ridge Racer)
that I never cared much for the first time around, or
absolutely require multiple people to be fun (Madden,
Timesplitters). And I don't plan on sharing my PS2 goodness
with anyone I know. Suckers."
(Publisher: EA | Developer: EA)
#2 Summoner (Publisher: THQ | Developer: Volition)
#3 Tie between Smuggler's Run, Armored Core 2 and Midnight
Club GT. (I'm only buying 3, so I'm having a hard time making
up my mind.)
