Sony Announces PSX
May 28,
2003
Sony unveiled it's latest console today, dubbed the
PSX. This console is basically an all-in-one package that
includes the PS2, a 120GB hard drive, Ethernet adapter, TV/Satellite
tuner, and a DVD-RW burner. Since this console is being
marketed as a set-top box instead of a game console, it's
distribution will be handled by Sony's Home division instead of Sony
Computer Entertainment.

There are several significant design differences
between this console and the PS2 we all know and love. First,
the PSX will not support existing PSOne/PS2 memory cards; instead,
it will support Sony memory sticks. No word yet on how current
PS2 owners will be able to transfer their save files to the new
format. Secondly, the controller ports are now located in the
rear of the console. Finally, the DVD drive is a slot-loading
one.

The console is set to be released in Japan by the end
of this year, with a worldwide release sometime in 2004. A
price has not yet been announced.
