Vexx
is a action-platformer game that borrows elements from Banjo-Kazooie
and Super Mario 64. Scheduled to be released on the
Xbox, PS2, and GameCube, and Acclaim is hoping that Vexx
will be a landmark title when it comes to platformer games,
already made to a high standard by Banjo-Kazooie, and
its sequel, Banjo-Tooie. With the information that we
currently have about the game, and the gorgeous screenshots to
boot, Vexx could be a benchmark for future platforming games.

Vexx is a young man living in a village called Rockhaven, on
the planet Astara. Astara is a beautiful planet shattered with
destruction by the evil ruler Dark Yabu and his Shadowraiths.
Yabu is using the village people as his slaves, and the worse
part of all: Yabu killed Vexx's beloved grandfather. Consumed
with rage and wanting revenge, Vexx boards Yabu's airship and
discovers two magical and powerful relics called Astani Battle
Gauntlets that attaches to Vexx's hands to make him have
superpowers. Vexx is then discovered and attacked by Yabu, and
is left for dead. But, of course, Vexx is still alive, and
with the help of a blind hermit named Darby, Vexx sets out on
a quest to avenge his grandfather's death, and restore peace
to the planet.
So, what kind of superpowers does Vexx have? With the Astani
Battle Gauntlets, Vexx can perform a variety of slashes/energy
blasts to his enemies. Superpowers will be based on the four
elements (fire, wind, water, earth), and certain environments
will call for a certain element. Vexx will go through 6 large
worlds ranging from volcanic islands to desert temples, and 18
unique levels. There will be three levels to a world, if you
can't do the math. One of the biggest intentions in Vexx is to
create a fairly large world, made for the player to do lots of
exploring. Almost everything will be accessible to Vexx, and a
ton of secrets will be available to find (including hints and
clues for better game playing, and more back story). The
screenshots I've looked at for the game look gorgeous. The
environments will boast a lot of good visual treats, and the
characters will be nicely detailed. The game will run at
an impressive 60 steady frames a second, also, and that's
never a bad thing. Vexx could be one of the more
gorgeous upcoming games for the Xbox.

If the information we have and the screenshots available are
any indication, Vexx could make the likes of Donkey
Kong 64 or Banjo-Kazooie look like one of those
cheap PSOne games still being released today. I think Vexx
will surprise a lot of people, and it could be the sleeper hit
of 2002. This game doesn't have a solid release date
yet, but it should be out by October.
