Like
expected, the visual punch (no pun intended) of Round 2 is
impeccable. Each fighter is created with a completely diverse
look and attitude from the next, with Midway implementing great
textures and an immerse amount of detail into each boxer. The
animation and collision detection is spot-on, too, as each
character reacts and responds in both a realistic and humorous
manner. The only gripe I have with the overall quality of the
graphics is that the colors for the game appears rather, well,
bland. Its not that Midway didn't put in a lot of effort - you
can obviously see that they turned in a vast number of hues and
tints for all aspects of the game - but the problem is that they
chose the wrong color palette for it. Round 2's look is
blemished because the game has this slight case of fog over the
game, due to game having muddled and pale colors picked for the
finish. Otherwise, Round 2 has solid visuals and animation.
Even with
Michael Buffer's annoying and monotonous voice, the game's audio
representation still shines. Punches land with a convincing
"Thwack", music and unnoticeable audio cues have a
special, arcadey feel to them and some of the boxers in Round 2
have absolutely hysterical taunts and in-ring insults to throw.
Add in the decent background music plus nice, individual groans,
and we've got a great aural showing.
In the end,
there really aren't a ton of technical problems found in Ready 2
Rumble: Round 2. It's the fact that the game just doesn't do
enough for itself to produce a worthwhile experience. The
Championship mode, while improved, still doesn't offer the
challenge and enjoyment that even wrestling games have a
prestige of. When unlocking characters is the main highlight of
a fighting game and not mastering the engine and complexity of
the game's mechanics, you know you've got a problem. An
enjoyable game with great aesthetic qualities about it, Round 2
just falls short of being warranted the status of "Should
Buy" list.
HIGHS:
-Snazzy
graphics and superb character animation -Much improved AI
-Character personalities
LOWS:
-Replay is
boring after a short time
-Game looks slightly washed out
FINAL VERDICT:
Though it
doesn't offer a whole lot in terms of replay value before it
gets boring and repetitious, Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2 should
provide a great time for old-school arcade fans and parties. I
can't really recommend a full retail purchase of the game, but
definitely look into it as a weekend rental, at the least.
